Scholarships and Grants Demonstrate Our Commitment to Giving

NOTE:  APPLICATIONS DUE BY NOVEMBER 1, 2010

The Greens Market

The Greens Market has generally supported several recurring local and national organizations with grants and scholarships.
They include:

  • Center for Forensic Psychiatry, part of the Community Health Program for the State of Michigan, servicing the entire state. They have been grant recipients the past four years and the monies have been used for plant materials and herbs, and ornamental garden items, i.e., arbor, bird bath and a professional dehydrator for the herbs. The garden is used in direct patient contact as therapy and rehabilitation and has been successful in treating patients.
  • The University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens, School Bus Subsidy. The Conservatory and Gardens are hosts to more than 10,000 school children annually and the subsidy supports their transportation costs. The students come from Washtenaw County and the greater metropolitan area. Many inner city and rural students would not be exposed to the Gardens without the bus subsidy from Farm & Garden. Since 1982 we have given more than $50,000 to the Gardens to support internships, the bus subsidy, and the Gateway Gardens.
  • The University of Michigan School of Natural Resources for a Graduate Scholarship. Since 1983 we have given more than $60,000 in gifts to the School of Natural Resources.
  • The University of Michigan Biological Station is awarded a scholarship annually for a graduate student to spend the summer at the Biological Station. Since 1989 we have given more than $26,000 to fund scholarships at the Biological Station.
  • Most years, since 1962, our Branch supports four scholarships as part of our National Organization: 4-H Leadership Training, and International 4-H Exchange, the Frysinger Scholarship, and the Lady Aberdeen Scholarships.

The Grace Frysinger Fellowship Exchange is completely funded by scholarship, and is to increase understanding and good will between organized groups of women throughout the world. Every three years, a member of Farm and Garden is selected and travels for 4-6 weeks in a foreign country, returning with the host country's Exchangee. In 2006, Claudia Scioly, past president of the Ann Arbor Branch, was selected as the 15th Frysinger International Exchangee to Iceland.

The Lady Aberdeen Scholarships are given to women of underdeveloped countries for study at a qualified university in order that they may return to their own country and teach their native people nutrition, sanitation, and the art of family living.

  • Miscellaneous other scholarships and grants are awarded, i.e., in 2002 the Ypsilanti Senior Citizen Recreation Center's new program: Green Thumb Program was funded in total from our grant, and it aligned senior citizens, plants, and nursing home residents.
